On my trip to Florida there was one song that wouldn’t stop playing on the radio. Cool Kids by Echosmith. Here’s the thing, I have heard of them before, especially on Awkward (you know the MTV tv show? If you don’t know what I am talking about, what are you waiting for? Go watch the pilot!), where they mention them in one of the episodes of the fourth season.
When I came back to Brazil this song got stuck in my head for days and it became part of my Florida 2014 Soundtrack (along with All About that Bass… Seriously, it gets stuck like a gum, it’s annoying!).
Already at my home with this song playing in my mind endlessly, I decided to listen now with the lyrics in front of me so I can pay more attention to it. I had many first impressions of the lyrics, so I kept reading over and over, and I got into a conclusion (also with a little help from some fellas in the youtube comments, oh yeah, there are a few nice people left in that section wo hoo!). So here I go…
One of my first thoughts right after I decided to analyze the song a little deeper was “youtubers”. A few months ago, many videos were posted where “The Youtube Culture” was discussed, videos where they said things like “we’re ordinary people like you”. I didn’t want to go behind that subject, so I don’t know how* it all started and why. However, that was a topic that was surrounding the social media for a while, not only youtube but many others. In summary, the relationship between “content maker” and their audience was discussed, and how the whole thing was idealize.
I am going to stop right there because this is a hell of a theme with a lot of content to talk about (maybe an entire blog post about this? Hummm…). Therefore, we should come back to the beginning of this all. Cool Kids. Got it? Remembered? Great! Thinking about the lyrics, I imagined the Cool Kids being perfect people fantasized by ordinary people. Celebrities and their fans.
Let the decode begin.
Have you ever noticed how everybody in the business know each other? It doesn’t matter if it’s in Hollywwod, or in the Google premises, those who use of the same communication tools know each other. It’s like they have their own privet club. Or maybe it’s because they work in the same area, which makes the possibility of a rencounter more possible. (I rely on the second option).
In this world, who gets more views? Your video for the Ice Bucket Challenge or Taylor Swift? Oh well… We all know the answer. (But what I like to remember is that anyone could get as popular as Ms. Swift. She was just like us before she became one of the biggest pop stars, right?)
We’ll skip the chorus. I’ll talk about it later.
This verse and the following one, to me, seem to have more interpretations than the rest of the lyrics. This is where the cool kids are treated more like human beings and less like flawless creatures. They are not seen as invincible as they appear in the beginning of the song. Not anymore.
They sound so happy and free and young and yes YOLO. Nope. Read it again and I saw a different point of view for the picture in my mind. The cool kids are people who are just as confused and complicated as we are. It’s like they’re thinking “We are on top of the world but now what?”.
The chorus may seem harmless, but I have to detach one simple little detail that might get lost with the rest of the words. “ ‘Cause all the cool kids seem to get it”
They know. They understand. They have the secrets of it all. Why the rest of us don’t? How do we find out?
The real question is: do we really wanna know?
The album Talking Dreams was released in 2013, but better late than never because they are fresh talents that deserve to be recognize. I listened to their album and you should too.
*if you watch the linked videos, Vicky says the debate started with Louise (Sprinkle of Glitter), but we don’t know if she was inspired by another video or whatever, so how it began is still a mystery to me.
